From San Pedro to Brooklyn: the jar that started it

April 30, 2026 · 5 min read

For most of my life, the sazón just appeared. A recycled jar in the fridge door, refilled by some invisible magic that I now know was my grandmother at six in the morning.

When I moved north, I tried to make it from memory and failed for months. The problem was that there was no recipe — only her hands, her measurements of "a little of this," her sense of when it smelled right.

So we did it over video calls. She would hold ingredients up to the camera; I would weigh everything and write it down. Twelve batches later, she tasted a spoonful I sent her and said, simply, "yes." That jar is why this whole thing exists.
